With text by Jean-François Lyotard.
By paying tribute to Karel Appel's paintings, Lyotard propounds a fundamental criticism of the philosophical discourse on art. But his essay is more than just an aesthetic interpretation: pivoting on the crucial concept of "gesture", it sympathetically translates Appel's work into language and reveals painting as a mysterious, yet readable text of colours.
The original text is in French under the title "Karel Appel, un geste de couleur".
